On-Campus Employment for J-1

All J-1 student employment requires the responsible officer (RO) to approve the specific employment in writing, and the student's SEVIS record to be updated to reflect the employment authorization.

If you are a J-1 student and have an on campus job offer, you can report your on-campus employment with the International Student Services Office by using the link below.  Please do so as soon as you get your on campus job.

Additionally, J-1 students with an on-campus job or job offer can apply for a Social Security Number.  The only way to receive a Social Security Number is by making a formal application in person to the Social Security Administration.  If you do not have a Social Security Number, a Social Security Number support letter will be issued when you report your on campus employment.  Use this link to learn How to Apply for Social Security Number as J-1 Student.

J-1 students may only work on-campus for less than 20 hours during the academic year and less than 29 hours during the long summer and winter vacations. Students must be registered and matriculated in accordance with campus guidelines in order to work on campus.

J-1 students may NOT work off campus without employment authorization. If you have questions about applying for authorization to accept off-campus employment, please contact the International Student Programs.
