Adding a J-2 Dependent

International students who wish to bring their spouse and/or children to the U.S. must provide additional documentation before SUNY New Paltz can issue the appropriate immigration documents for your J-2 dependent(s).

If your dependent will change his/her immigration status in the U.S., then you and your dependent should meet with an International Student Advisor to discuss the change of status application.

International Student Advisors are available to answer questions during walk-in hours or you can make an appointment to meet an advisor.

Eligibility

  • You must be in valid J-1 status to request an DS-2019(s) for your dependents

Required Materials

  • Photocopy of your marriage certificate if adding a spouse and/or birth certificate if adding a child.  All documents must be translated into English.

  • Photocopy of the identification page of passport for spouse and/or child.

  • Financial documentation:   A student wishing to have his/her family member(s) accompany them must document that they can financially support themselves and their dependents while studying in the U.S.  Please read and complete the attached International Student Financial Statement and return it to the Center for International Programs with the financial documentation requested.  Note, the International Student Financial Statement is only required if the funding is from a sponsor.  Additionally, banks statements must reflect current balances issued within the past 3 months, documenting at least $10,000 USD per dependent.  Please keep a set of original financial documents for when you dependent(s) applies for their visa or change of status
