Adding an F-2 Dependent

Eligibility

You must be in valid F-1status to request an I-20(s) for your dependents.
 

Required Materials

• Photocopy of your marriage certificate if adding a spouse and/or birth certificate if adding a child.  All documents must be translated into English. 

• Photocopy of the identification page of passport for spouse and/or child.  

• Financial documentation:   A student wishing to have his/her family member(s) accompany them must document that they can financially support themselves and their dependents while studying in the U.S.  Please read and complete the International Student Financial Statement and upload it to the Dependent Request.  Note, the International Student Financial Statement is only required if the funding is from a sponsor.  Additionally, banks statements must reflect current balances issued within the past 6 months, documenting at least $10,000 USD per dependent.  Please keep a set of original financial documents for when your dependent(s) applies for their visa or change of status

• If F-1 student is on OPT or STEM Extension, please submit appropriate employment reporting form. 
   

Procedure

1. Log in to your My ISS-Profile.

2. Click on "2. Requests."

3. Under “What Can We Help You With”, see your request options, and click on the request you would like to make (choose Dependent Request).

4. You will need to upload financial documentation in the Bank Statement section.

5. In the Dependent Passport(s) section you will need to upload the passport identification page for each dependent, and in the Proof of Relationship section you will need to upload your proof of relationship (translated marriage/birth certificate).

6. Submit
    

Special Considerations

• Dependent children must be unmarried and under 21 years of age, and parents or other relatives are not eligible.

• You must complete the Dependent Request in My ISS-Profile for each dependent you would like an I-20 issued for. 

• HEALTH INSURANCE REQUIREMENT - F-1 students must purchase health insurance for their F-2 dependents while they are in the U.S. The insurance must be through UnitedHealthcare, the same insurance provider in which the F-1 student is enrolled.
