How to Return to the United States in Valid F-1 Immigration Status after a Trip Abroad


Current OPT or STEM OPT Extension Students

 

International students who are currently on OPT or STEM OPT Extension and are returning to the US from a trip abroad must be prepared to show the following documentation at the port of entry:

  • Passport valid at least 6 months into the future

  • Unexpired F-1 visa valid for future entries into the United States

  • OPT or STEM OPT extension I-20 signed within the past 6 months

  • OPT or STEM OPT extension EAD card

  • Letter from employer verifying your employment on return to the US


If you are in F-1 status and travel abroad, the travel signature on page 2 must be less than 6 months old on the date of re-entry into the US.  If you do not travel abroad, it is not necessary obtain a travel signature.

 

 

Procedure: 

  1. Log in to your My OPT-Profile.   

  2. Click on “2. Requests.”  

  3. Under “What Can We Help You With”, see your request options, and click on the request you would like to make (Travel Signature Request).

  4. Complete the Travel Signature Agreement.

  5. Answer OPT/STEM OPT Questionnaire. 

  6. Submit.


** If your employer has changed, you must complete the OPT Employer Update Request in the International Student Platform before an I-20 with travel signature will be issued.
