How to Return to the United States in Valid F-1 Immigration Status after a Trip Abroad


Currently OPT or STEM OPT Extension Students

 

International students who are currently on OPT or STEM OPT Extension and are returning to the US from a trip abroad must be prepared to show the following documentation at the port of entry:

  • Passport valid at least 6 months into the future

  • Unexpired F-1 visa valid for future entries into the United States

  • OPT or STEM OPT extension I-20 signed within the past 6 months

  • OPT or STEM OPT extension EAD card

  • Letter from employer verifying your employment on return to the US


If you are in F-1 status and travel abroad, the travel signature on page 2 must be less than 6 months old on the date of re-entry into the US.  If you do not travel abroad, it is not necessary obtain a travel signature.

 

To request a Travel Signature while on OPT or STEM OPT Extension:

  • You must complete the OPT Employment Update  request.  
    Once you confirm your employment using the OPT Employment Update  request, an I-20 with travel signature w​ill be issued.
