International students with J-1 status are required to register full-time every semester and are limited in the amount of time they may continue in an academic or language program. International students in J-1 status are required to complete their academic program by the expected completion date noted on the initial DS-2019.
Exchange & Visiting students who are approved to extend their time at New Paltz must apply for a program extension with International Student Services office no later than 15 days prior to the expiration of their current DS-2019.
Dual Diploma students who are not able to complete their current program by the expected completion date because of an academic or medical reasons, must also apply for a program extension with International Student Services office no later than 15 days prior to the expiration of their current DS-2019.
You must be in lawful J-1 status under the visa supervision of SUNY New Paltz.
You must have maintained unbroken full-time enrollment for every semester of your program in which you were in J-1 status.
Delays in completing your studies must not be caused by academic probation or suspension.
In your final semester, you must take a seated course and cannot register for an online course only.

Confirmation of continued enrollment in the SUNY International Student Health Insurance.
Log in to your My ISS-Profile.
Click on “2. Requests.”
Under “What Can We Help You With”, see your request options, and click on the request you would like to make.
You will need to upload your updated financial documentation (and Financial Statement, if parent, family, or other funds will support your program).
Upload your confirmation of continued SUNY Health Insurance Coverage.
Request Electronic Recommendation from your home university academic advisor.
Submit.
You will receive an email from the International Student Services office once your updated D-2019 has been issued.
You must submit all materials for the extension to International Student Programs in VH 201 at least 15 days prior to your DS-2019 completion date.
