Center for International Program

  • Researching Race in American Culture

Description:  Race and Racism are experienced in many different ways all over the world. The experience of race and racism in the United States, is something that may be difficult to approach without context. This workshop will focus on how to approach this topic from the perspective of academic research; exploring the history of the systems that have made the state of race relations in the United States what it is today and continue to do so. This workshop will be focused on how to research for the history and experience of race in the United States while also investigating how that is reinforced by the act of researching this topic itself.
In preparation for the event, we offer the following questions for you to reflect on:When you read or hear about issues regarding race or social justice issues in America, what are some of your thoughts?  Questions?  Concerns?

How do you feel understanding race in America could help you in better understanding your field (major/discipline), your relationships, or your future?

What language would you use if you wanted to research race in American culture?  For example, what search terms would you consider using in Google or the library's search engines?

Can you think of a conversation you have had about racism or prejudice?  If so, what was the conversation like?
